House of Terror - Andrássy út 60, Budapest, Hungary

Whenever foreign guests visit the Alexian Brothers in Hungary, we always show them this place, which was created in a dark period of Hungarian history. The building, which was in operation between 1948 and 1956, was the headquarters of the communist secret police, the ÁVH (State Protection Authority), under the control of the dictator and party general secretary Mátyás Rákosi. It's task was to find and punish the enemies of the dictatorial regime and many people were murdered here. This is commemorated in the exhibition, which details the work of the organisation through artefacts and video footage.
